INTER-CHANGES: CRAFT AND CONTEXT, SYMPOSIUM AND EXHIBITIONS
Inter-Changes: Craft and Context is a symposium running in NCAD, Dublin on the 13th and 14th of April 2010, supported by the Fulbright Commission and the Crafts Council of Ireland. Intending to deepen the discourse surrounding contemporary craft in Ireland and internationally, speakers included Glenn Adamson and Arline Fisch, as well as glass artists Wayne Stratmann, Geoffrey Mann, Renata Pekowska and Suzannah Vaughan. While the symposium goes on, visitors can also see glassblowing demonstrations by Roisin deBuitlear, joined by Derek Smith, Danny Murphy and Tony Hayes of Irish Handmade Glass, Waterford City. Accompanying the symposium are two exhibitions running in Dublin city. This show features work by glass artists Eva Kelly, Caroline Madden, Renata Pekowska, Deirdre Rogers, Suzannah Vaughan and Mary B.White. The second exhibition is called Craft and Context: Influx, and opens to the public at 7pm on 14th April, running until the 22nd April in Plane/Site, IMOCA, Dublin 2. Featuring work by glass artists Suzannah Vaughan and Mary White, along with textile artists Aoife Ludlow, Liz Nilsson and Brigitta Varadi, ceramic artists Richy Quin, Lesley Kelly and Peter Fulop, and metalsmith Suzanne Rogers. VISUAL ARTISTS IRELAND APPEAL FOR RETENTION OF AN ARTS MINISTER IN THE CABINET
The following is a message from Visual Artists Ireland:
The current uncertainty caused by the early retirement of the Minister of Arts, Sport & Tourism is a cause for concern. We have looked for clarification and confirmation that there will be a replacement minister in place in the forthcoming cabinet reshuffle. We haven’t been able to get a definite response on that. ! !
For this reason we ask that you join us in making contact with your local government representative and ask that they lobby for the retention of an Arts minister at the Cabinet table.
We suggest that you personalise the following paragraph with details of the importance that you place on the role of having the arts represented in cabinet.
"In the forthcoming reshuffle, the government must show its commitment to the arts by the appointment of a Minister of Arts, Sport & Tourism to replace outgoing Minister Cullen"

TEXTILE PRINTING WORKSHOPS, DUBLIN
Sat/Sun 17th/18th April
These workshops will teach various approaches to creating multi-layer surface designs on fabrics using different printing techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to combine their own graphics and photographic images with cloth to create highly individual fabrics. The resulting fabric can be a finished artefact or the basis for embroidery or other embellishments .
Multiple processes, combining different types of fabrics and papers will be used, including, Photo Transfers – using photocopies, acrylic medium, silkscreens, thermofax screens, rollers and brushes.
Transfer Paints – designs monoprinted or painted onto paper then ironed onto fabric to create the design. Water Soluble crayons – used with rubbing plates [e.g. involving card, string, pva] silk screens and acrylic medium.
All specialised equipment will be provided.
Cost of Workshop: 120 euros
Location: 15 Neville Road, Rathgar, Dublin 6

The Freshair Scholarship is a unique opportunity for an emergent Glass maker, who has completed his/her formal training, to work and gain experience within a leading UK commercial and creative glass blowing studio environment. The Scholarship will run for Fifteen weeks commencing in September 2010. The essence of the scholarship is to enable the candidate to develop within the context of the creative marketplace and then to move forward with their own business. As part of a glass blowing team the successful candidate will receive training and be involved in all aspects of the operation of the studio whilst developing and documenting a body of work that will be exhibited and sold/auctioned at the Freshair Exhibition 2011. NUUTAJARVI ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAMME, FINLAND: CALL
This residency offers studio glassblowers and artists an opportunity to work with hot glass in Nuutajärvi Glass Village, Finland from the 6th to the 16th August 2010. In Nuutajärvi you will find one of Iittala Group's glassworks, Tavastia Glass School and Lasikomppania aka "The Glass Company", a local glass cooperative. Lasikomppania was founded in 2003 to provide facilities for independent glassmakers and artists and to make Nuutajärvi more well known as a glass centre in Finland and abroad.
The residency covers ten days. It includes five days in the hot shop for glassblowing or hot casting with clear glass. The artist is responsible of travel expenses and additional materials. The hotshop contains two gloryholes with diameters of 17,7" and 11,8", three annealers and a tank furnace. You will be using Glasma C48 pellets. Capasity of glass use is max. 100kg a day. Accommodation and breakfast are provided for one person in the guesthouse.
The chosen artist is to have a presentation, of his/her work in Nuutajärvi, if possible. (For example a slideshow etc). The Glass Company will also hold one piece of work for its collections for future exhibitions.

final piece. The project is to be fully completed and the final
