GET INVOLVED IN THE NCFA'S NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION

The National Campaign for the Arts is organising a National Day of Action for arts and culture
on Friday 17 September. On this day art workers in every constituency around the country
will meet their local TD. Amidst a nationwide media campaign, they will discuss with their local
representatives the fundamental importance of the arts to Ireland’s economic recovery.

You can get involved.

- Join the arts workers group where you are registered to vote
- As part of this group, write to your TDs requesting a meeting on Friday 17 September
- Take part in the meetings and events on the day

In addition every constituency is putting together a list of people who are registered to vote in that
constituency and who work in the arts (even if your work is based in another constituency). This
is a powerful tool when meeting TDs and Councillors. Jobs in their constituency matter! Be sure
to give the constituency organiser your address so we have an accurate constituency database.

AUGUST CRAFT MONTH: HIGHLIGHTS

Craft NI are celebrating August Craft Month in style, with events all over Northern Ireland. Some highlights include:

Three x 3 at Craft NI Gallery, Belfast: A touring exhibition by glass artists Andrea Spencer, Scott Benefield and Sean Campbell
Taking Time, Millenium Court Arts Centre, Portadown: An international exhibition about craft and the influence of the Slow Movement
Making It, University of Ulster's Belfast Campus: An exhibition showcasing the work of four emerging craftspeople who've taken part in Craft NI's Making It busieness development programme
Stained glass workshop, Landscape Centre, Antrim: Running on Saturday 28 August, 10am - 4pm

GLASS FUSING WORKSHOPS AT UCCELLI STUDIO, ARMAGH

Exciting one day courses designed to introduce you to the basics of creating unique and individual fused glass jewellery.

Working with bullseye fusing glass, students will develop an understanding of cutting glass, kiln fusing & beading techniques, experimenting with vibrant colours and shapes to create one-off pieces ready to wear.

Suitable for beginners, you will be guided throughout the day by Paula Boyle, professional glass artist and jewellery designer.
The class is situated in the scenic Co. Armagh countryside at the Uccelli studio and there will be maximum of six students to ensure individual attention.

The cost of the day course is £70.00 this will include:
Colourful bulleye sheet glass and glass powders, jewellery materials - hooks, beads & clasps. Jewellery making tools and use of kiln.
Refreshments & homemade lunch also included.

Midweek & Saturday courses run from 10am until 5.30pm.

KILN CASTING WORKSHOP WITH FIAZ ELSON, NSL, CORK

A Master Class “The Perfect Vessel” September 16th – 22nd 2010 Class Leader: Karl Harron

Form: “...by which shape is determined, as distinguished from the material of which it is composed, giving it individuality and a distinctive character”.
The aim of this 7-day Master Class is to achieve a “sublime form”. The process is to discard the superfluous and to identify and develop a personal concept. The result will be a form that is the simple expression of a complex thought and students will be encouraged to adopt a sculptural approach to their work - a search for form and push their glass in a new direction rather than master a technique. In order to develop your aesthetic and conceptual perspective, while negotiating the technical challenges of deep-slumping into 3-step ceramic moulds, the beginning will be with pencil and paper, drawing from the immediate environmental stimuli surrounding The Glass Studio with mark-making realised through the application of accessory glasses such as frits, stringers, powders and confetti.
