SEAN CAMPBELL WINS AT ROYAL ULSTER ACADEMY EXHIBITION

Congratulations to Sean Campbell who was recently awarded the ‘Robinson McIlwaine Architects Original Vision Prize’ for his piece Sentinel – Belfast Lego at the annual Royal Ulster Academy Exhibition for 2011. This is the 130th annual mixed media exhibition, held at the Ulster Museum in Belfast and runs until later in November.

MICHELLE O’ DONNELL (GLASSHAMMER STUDIOS) UNVEILS NEW GLASS INSTALLATION

On Thursday 20th October 2011, a glass art installation by Michelle O’ Donnell of Glasshammer Studios was officially unveiled at Rathmore National School in Naas, Co. Kildare. Michelle was selected by the Per Cent for Artwork committee to complete the project. The large landscape piece was fabricated after a series of workshops with the students, and is now available for all to see.

SPONTANEOUS ORDER EXHIBITION AND ARTIST TALKS, SIGNAL ARTS CENTRE, BRAY


Ten female emerging artists have joined in Spontaneous Order to highlight their combined knowledge and skill in Irish craft. The work on exhibition at Signal Arts Centre is made with the same sensitivity and attention to detail an Irish craftsperson would have used centuries ago. Each represented artist shows supreme respect for her medium and this is expressed in the quality of the pieces in this exhibition.

Spontaneous Order features the work of glass-makers Emma Bourke, Fiona Byrne, Maggie Cashman and Emer Lynch, among other makers of various disciplines.

DESIGN TREE EXHIBITION, THE IRISH DESIGN SHOP, DUBLIN

The Irish Design Shop presents the exhibition Design Tree as part of Design Week 2011. This exhibition, which opened on 2nd November at no.28 South William Street, showcases the work of twenty makers working in glass, metals, ceramics and jewellery.

Glass exhibitors in Design Tree include Róisín de Buitléar, Karen Donnellan, Catherine Keenan and Sarah McEvoy. The show will continue until Sunday 13th November 2011.

IRISH CRAFT PORTFOLIO, ROYAL HIBERNIAN ACADEMY, DUBLIN

For the first time, the Crafts Council of Ireland will hold an exhibition at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin. A selection of work from Irish Craft Portfolio 2011 will showcase contemporary work by some of Ireland’s most internationally-recognised makers. The exhibition will be officially opened by art critic Gemma Tipton at an event on Thursday 24th November at 6pm, and the exhibition runs until 28th November 2011 at RHA Gallery, Ely Place, Dublin 2.

GLASSBLOWING AND SAND CASTING WORKSHOPS, LEITRIM SCULPTURE CENTRE

Glassblowing for Beginners

In this two-day workshop participants will explore the extraordinary medium of hot glass. How to gather glass out of the furnace, to control and shape the hot glass, to blow a bubble and make a simple vessel will be taught. Working in two small teams, the emphasis of this course is hands-on experience, with demos and support from experienced trainers.

Sand Casting with Hot Glass
This two day course will introduce the potential of molten glass as a creative material through the process of hot casting into sand moulds. Participants will have the opportunity to ladle glass straight from the furnace and pour right into prepared ‘open faced’ sand moulds using found and sculpted objects. This is the most direct method to create your own solid sculptural forms in glass. All materials are provided, but feel free to bring in your own objects to press in the sand. Appropriate footwear is a must: leather boots are preferred, leather shoes acceptable; no open-toed shoes or sandals!

PATE DE VERRE VESSELS MINI-MASTERCLASS BY ALISON LOWRY, UNIVERSITY OF ULSTER

In the first in a series of two-day 'mini masterclasses', glass artist Alison Lowry will show participants how to create vessels using pate de verre (glass paste). This workshop takes place from 9.30am - 5pm, 19th and 20th November 2011 at the ceramic department, University of Ulster. The cost of the workshop is £125/£100 concession.

All aspects of this technique will be covered from design to mould making, packing the glass to firing. No previous experience with glass is required and all materials will be supplied.

GAMES - GLASS PANEL EXHIBITION, CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Games; an exhibition of glass panels, will take place at the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea from 8th July to 23rd September 2012. The exhibition will commemorate the Olympics taking place in Britain. With the theme of ‘games’ in mind, applicants are asked to submit 40cm x 40cm glass panels; interpretation of the theme is open to the individual. Specific framing requirements must be adhered to. MFA GLASS PROGRAMME SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY CARBONDALE – CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The MFA program in Glass at Southern Illinois University is a three year programme and offers graduate assistantships with full tuition waiver and monthly stipend. The School of Art and Design at SIU Carbondale includes a 4,000-square-foot Surplus Gallery, facilities in glass, ceramics, blacksmithing, small metals, foundry, sculpture, and 2D areas including printmaking, as well as up-to-date digital imaging equipment. Graduate students have private studio space, 24-hour access to studio facilities, and exposure to a variety of art, design, and art history courses as well as visiting artist lectures and workshops. With over 50 graduate students in the School of Art and Design, SIU offers a strong sense of community for entering MFA students.

The Glass program at SIU has a fully equipped hotshop and coldshop, numerous kilns of varying sizes, as well as a moldmaking area, critique space, and a mobile glass studio. Students also have access to photo equipment for documentation of work. Strong applicants to the MFA program in glass should be pursuing research in glass and developing their career toward being professional artists. The Glass program is seeking graduate assistants who have experiences as glass studio technician
and/or teaching beginning level glass survey classes. A variety of graduate assistantships are available throughout the art and design
areas. All Graduate assistantships have full tuition waiver and monthly
stipend. Travel funds and scholarships are also available for the graduate
students to attend conferences and participate in exhibitions.

NORTHLANDS CREATIVE GLASS – KILN FORMING AND KILN CASTING RESIDENCY

Northlands are offering an eight week residency for four talented glass artists and are looking for artists who have an interest in exploring new forms of making, or ways of working, through collaboration. LECTURER REQUIRED, SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY CARBONDALE, USA


SIU Carbondale - School of Art and Design - is seeking a 50% FTE Lecturer (non-tenure-track) in Glass. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a two-semester term appointment (Spring Semester 1st January – 15th May 2012; Fall Semester 16th August – 31st December 2012)

Qualifications required: MFA degree in Studio Glass with previous college level teaching experience in glass area. Applicants must exhibit proficiency in teaching a variety of advanced level studio glassart and concepts at advanced college level. Applicants must be proficient with organizing and maintaining a glass studio to include hot glass, kiln and cold glass working facilities. The applicant must show evidence of a strong commitment to personal research.

Duties: Responsibilities will include teaching two glass courses per semester along with maintaining office hours, supervising and organising the glass studio facilities. The successful candidate will also oversee the students who study in the Glass Program with the faculty in the area.
